Wed, Apr 29, 2020

To benefit from your smoke alarm, you need to keep an eye on that. Sometimes your smoke alarm suddenly starts beeping. It not only annoys you, but it also alarms you that something is wrong with your fire alarm. If you are thinking, why is my mains smoke alarm beeping? And how can you stop your hard-wired smoke detector from beeping or chirping, you are at the right place. In this article, we will discuss the reasons for a beeping smoke alarm and ways to stop it.

Why Does a Hard-Wired Smoke Alarm Chirp?

If you are tired of beeping sound, you can try the most commonly used troubleshooting tip, reset it. If chirping does not stop, it means there are other issues with it. Learn why a hard-wired smoke detector beeping and how to stop the hard wired smoke detector beeping and chirping:

1. Dust inside your detector:

Sometimes your hard wired detector beeps when dust accumulates in the sensing chamber. This causes your smoke detector to beeping and chirping. Sometimes you hear beeping sound at random times. One of the possibilities is that there is dust built up in the sensor because dust can cause false alarms. And to stop it from chipping, you need to clean the detector by following steps:

  • At the circuit box, turn off power to the detector.
  • Remove the cover
  • Clean out all the dust using a small brush or a vacuum hose
  • A mild detergent can also eliminate dust buildup.
  • Replace the cover of the detector

If you still hear the chirping sound, this might indicate that your detector is old or is malfunctioning.

2. A dead battery:

Most hard-wired smoke alarms come with a 9-volt backup battery that works if there is any problem with your home electricity. A high-pitched beep indicates that the battery is running low and you need to replace the smoke detector battery. You can replace the battery by following the steps given below:

  • At the circuit box, turn off power to the detector
  • Find the battery cover panel
  • Use a screwdriver to open the battery cover panel, if a screw is holding it in place
  • Remove and replace the old battery
  • Test the smoke detector by pressing the "test" button. Your detector is working if you hear a tone, otherwise chirping will persist. And in that case, the battery is not the problem.

3. An old or malfunctioning detector:

Sometimes your detector starts malfunctioning if it is too old because sensors break down with time. Some smoke detectors last 10 years. Check the manufacturing date of the smoke detector to see how old it is. If it is older than 10 years, replace the fire alarm. However, if it is new and still chirping, rule out other causes or contact a professional who can help you in this matter.

4. Interference (wireless models):

One possibility that your hard-wired smoke detector is chirping is the transference from similar systems. If this is the case, review the user's manual. And if necessary, adjust the dipswitches.

If your hard-wired smoke detector chirps and don't find any fire or smoke, there might be other reasons for it, and we have listed those reasons and their solutions as well.
